Dr. Smith obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Warwick, UK, in 1981 and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry, Canberra, Australia from 1980 to 1982. After a short period as Postdoctoral Researcher at the John Innes Centre, Norwich, UK in 1983, he was appointed Lecturer at Edinburgh University and became Head of the Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences. In 2005 he was awarded an Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship and appointed Winthrop Professor of Plant Genomics at the University of Western Australia. He was Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology and Director of the Centre of Excellence for Plant Metabolomics. In 2015 he was appointed Professor of Plant Genetics and Biochemistry at the University of Tasmania, Tasmania, Australia, and Professor in the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He specializes in strigolactone and karrikin signaling but has also published on auxins, brassinosteroids and gibberellins. He has published over 160 papers in journals including Nature, Nature Communications, Nature Chemical Biology, Science Signaling and PNAS.
