Rene-Jean Essiambre

Rene-Jean Essiambre received a bachelor degree and a Ph.D. in Physics and Optics from Universite Laval in Quebec City, Canada. During his Ph.D. studies, he also spent one year at McGill University in Montreal, Canada working on problems of solid-state physics. From 1995 to 1997, Dr. Essiambre pursued post-doctoral studies with Prof. Agrawal at The Institute of Optics of the University of Rochester. In September 1997, he joined Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies. Dr. Essiambre has worked in the field of optical switching, soliton communication systems, high-power fiber lasers and mode-locked fiber lasers. His main areas of interest are high-speed transmission (40 and 160 Gb/s) and the design of the physical layer of fiber-optic communication systems including the effects of Raman amplification, Rayleigh backscattering, multi-path interference, and particularly fiber nonlinearities. His current research focuses on network design, advanced modulation formats, optical phase conjugation and optical regeneration. Dr. Essiambre is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories, as well as a member of IEEE and OSA.
